I have purchased the RUTX11 to use as my backup internet connection, in Bridge mode, connected to my Unifi USG 3 router.

If i configure the RUTX11 in NAT mode, everything connects as expected and I get a public IP address in the range I would expect, as shown below.

However, as soon as I switch it into Bridge mode, it connects but I do not ever get a public IP Address, as shown below.

Why would switching it to Bridge mode, with all other settings the same, cause it to fail to acquire a public IP Address?

I have tried it with my laptop, and yes, I get an IP address assigned in bridge mode. So I am confident that the SIM card is not locked to any device as it works in the RUTX11 and also works if I insert it directly into the SIM Card slot of my laptop.

What is puzzling is when I change the MAC address to the Unifi USG router and plug it into the router, there is no IP address assigned.

I guess I am off to Unifi to see what they can tell me.

Thanks for the assist.

I'm hitting this exact same issue and will be retuning the RUTX11. Frankly, I would have probably been better served using a Raspberry PI with an LTE mode if wanted to spend my time hacking/troubleshooting issues. Would have been far cheaper.

@cbourne It is actually really simple to achieve. The hardest part is finding the MAC address for the WAN port. Once I have that, I have now configured several of these units for myself and clients and they just run nicely.

Finding the MAC address of the WAN port will depend on your router and may not be in the UI. I know for instance, it is not shown in the UI of the Unifi USG and you have to SSH into the unit and then run: -

show interfaces ethernet detail

That will list all the MAC addresses and you can slot the correct one into the RUTX11 interface.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have the MAC address its easy on the Draytek because its displayed on the status page. I also SSH'd into the device and confirmed it was correct. If I manually take the DHCP settings when I plug a laptop in then assign them as a static to the WAN port it all works, but obviously it won't if I reboot or reconnect the RUTX11.

If I connect my Netgear M2 to the Draytek everything works and it does not even need the MAC address. It just get the IP from the ISP and works.

Hello good day,

Regarding your problem when you use bridge mode this settings disable most of the routers features meaning the Public IP address given to it by the sim card will be assigned to the device that you put the MAC address in it's setting.

I have also updated the firmware on the USG.

I entered the Mac Address of the Ethernet port on my laptop into the mobile WAN setup. Same result, no IP Address and no internet access.

Based on the status below, I can see I am connected to my Telco correctly: -

Just to be sure that I am doing the correct thing, I am entering the MAC Address of my router (or laptop in the recent test) where circled below: -

I am not sure if it is any help, but these are the last entries in the System log when the RUTX11 is placed in Bridge mode: -

Hello,

I have tested it on my side and i was able to make it work.

1. Configure the settings in WAN > MOB1S1A1 > Bridge mode > Input the MAC address of the PC
2. Make sure that the PC is on DHCP Mode and then disable and enable the network adapter.
3. Then you are supposed to get the IP address from the sim card.

My test results:

One thing could you try using a normal Sim card from your phone that is having mobile data? Like other operators will do.
Some instances sim card is like having a functionality of MAC address binding to a certain device so if example this sim
card is used on another device when you insert it to different device it will not work.

So i would like you to test this kind of scenario use a different sim card. And see if it is working or not.

Hope it helps

I can now confirm that the issue was due to my having the wrong MAC address for my Unifi USG router. Sadly, the MAC address for the WAN2 port is not displayed in their UI and you have to dive into an SSH session to extract the correct MAC address.

Once I got the correct MAC address, I can confirm that the RUTX11 is working nicely in bridge mode.
