Hi,

I am exploring options for some Out Of Band management devices, and noticed the RUT955 can support USB Serial adapters over IP, however I am unsure if it is possible to have multiple serial devices on the RUT955?

Ideally the USB device would be the Get-Console 4 Port Serial Adapter which can be daisy chained (https://www.get-console.com/shop/en/usb-to-serial-cables/91-4-port-expandable-usb-serial-cable.html) to provide update 12 ports (each module uses 150ma)

Is anyone able to confirm if it is possible to use multiple serial ports over IP on the RUT955?

Hello

Yes it is possible to have multiple Serial devices over IP using Modbus TCP master function, other than that you can use RS485 Serial port to connect multiple serial devices directly to router.

Theoretically Port adapter should work with it as long as it has an IP address that RUT955 can send and receive data to/from, but I cannot guarantee performance since setup like that was not thoroughly tested.

But basic configuration example is here: https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/Configuring_Modbus_TCP_Master , also if you could provide topology or more detailed description on what setup you are imagining might give more insight.

Thanks for the response, I am unsure what Modbus is and how I could use it

I should of mentioned the devices I will be connecting to is console ports on switches/routers (various baud rates)

Ideally I would want each device on its own TCP port for quick telnet access to the serial port (https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/RUT955_USB_Tools#USB_to_serial)

Hello

Ten sadly, USB to serial is equal to RS232 serial port in most of it functionality. It supports single serial device connected  to it. You will not be able to set different baud rates or other settings.

Over TCP/IP mode means a little different thing. If it is configured as client, it will receive data through serial port and send it to server over yours WAN or LAN connection. IF it is configured as server it will be receiving data through network, and sending it to Serial device over USB to Serial connection. Bidirectional would mean it would act as both, but over IP connection is not happening through USB port.
