RUT955 firmwware & bootloader brick , what can i do?

Hello,

it seems that i have bricked the RUT955. I have developed a script that updates a official RUT955 Firmware over sysupgrade. To check if the firmware flash is complete, i poll the SSH port and try to reconnect and check if it is back again. Then in the middle of the firmware flash the ssh login poll responded but with an error and it seems that the firmware flash procedure also stopped and ssh died again. The device would do nothing for almost 30 minutes, so i turned it off and on. After this it was totally dead. I can boot into the bootloader recovery mode, but it was totally broken. The html layout is destroyed, and the update button simply dosent work anymore. I tried the script again with a second device to verify if it was some kind of hardware issue, and the same brick happend again.

Is there a other way to resurrect the RUT955? (TFTP?)

Hello,

If you can reach the bootloader, you can easily upload a new firmware through it.

When you perform bootloader procedure (Hold reset before plugging in power) follow the url 192.168.1.1/index.html and upload firmware file through there.

Edit: I just read your post again. Could you please screenshot broken bootloader menu? Bootloader should have not been touched by a firmware upgrade. It is weird that it was affected.

Sorry can`t make a screenshot anymore, because i resurrected one device after multiple reboots and retrys and the other one i killed completely by a uboot update. The ethernet leds are dead and dont blink like on the resurrected one, only the power led is green. Also the "teltonika" logo was missing and only showed the broken image icon. Tested it also under multiple browsers. 

Here is what i have done step by step.

  • Send Firmware binary to “/tmp/”
  • Execute over SSH “sysupgrade –v /tmp/fw.bin”
  • Successfully on two devices, two devices had an infinite loop and bricked (signal strength lighten up and down in a pattern and never stop)
  • The attempt to create a SSH connection was possible, but the password was always wrong. (Flash was in progress)
  • After a reboot (disconnecting power supply after 30 min of waiting) the device was dead (Power and Ethernet lights worked only)
  • failsafe (192.168.1.1/index.html) on one devices did nothing (resurrected one after multiple trys), on the other returns http error after firmware binary was sent.
  • Flashing of U-boot loader (192.168.1.1/uboot.html) killed the bootloader completely on the second device.

If even uboot is not reachable, I'm afraid the only way forward is to send this device to RMA: https://teltonika-iot-group.com/rma/
