Hello,
Thank you for your question,
There are some fundamental differences between TRM240 and RUT200. TRM240 is a modem and it is only used to provide connectivity to a single device via USB. On the other hand, RUT200 is a router and can provide internet to multiple devices via Ethernet cable or WiFi. In addition, a router could be used in a combination with a switch to setup a much larger and more advanced network.
There also is a manageability difference, TRM240 can only be configured using AT commands and it does not support RUTOS operating system, but RUT200 can be accessed and configured via WebUI and CLI interfaces.
There are also some more differences, like:
• 4G LTE technology – CAT 1 (TRM240) vs CAT4 (RUT200);
• WiFi – TRM240 does not have WiFi;
• Ethernet ports – 2 x 10/100 vs none for TRM240;
• Power: TRM devices use USB for powering; RUT device has power supply;
• RUT200 has more advanced features: dynamic routing, hotspot, firewall, supports various VPNs, etc.
To sum up, it really depends on your application scenario. For example, modems are usually used when you need to connect one device to the internet and no other functionality is required. Such as providing internet connectivity to a vending or coffee machine, smart fridge and etc.
However, the router does give you way more control over your network and allows you to have a more secure connection with various VPNs and firewall customization options.
