I have a TRB140 being used as an SMS gateway and at times it will stop responding to SMS commands and the web gui shows no data for the modem.
I would like to update the modem firmware to see if it resolves the issue.

modem_tool reports that I need to use DFOTA, is there any documentation available on how to do this?

root@TRB140_SCADA_SMS:~# modem_updater -D -g
[INFO] Downloading key
[INFO] internet connection is working
[INFO]
Available versions:
EC25AUFAR02A04M4G
EC25AUFAR06A03M4G
EC25AUFAR06A05M4G
EC25AUFAR06A06M4G_01_02

root@TRB140_SCADA_SMS:~# modem_updater -i 1-1 -v EC25AUFAR06A06M4G_01_02
[ERROR] TRB modems are not supported. Please use DFOTA.

Current version is EC25AUFAR06A01M4G
TRB firmware is TRB1_R_00.07.02.7
Thanks.

Hi,

Due to how the TRB modems are constructed the modem_updater could not be used as the whole router would reboot in the process and it would break the update sequence.

Basically, TRB1 series devices use the modem for CPU, RAM, and FLASH, that's why the modem updater will not work in this case.

Also, they update proccess requires wired WAN connection, which the devices also do not have.

To update, please use DFOTA as mentioned in the error message

Thanks. Do you have any guides on how to "use DFOTA"?

I've found Quectel guides but the AT command is returning an error:

root@TRB140_SMS:~# gsmctl -A AT+QFOTADL=http://x.x.x.x/EC25AUFAR06A06M4GA.zip

ERROR

Hello,

my colleague seems to have missed this, but the TRB1 and TRB5 series do not support modem update functionality.

This is a hardware limitation, but RutOS version 7.3 should be released soon, which might solve your problem.

Other troubleshooting steps would include:

  • Modem reboot if the connection is lost (ping/wget reboot);
  • Factory reset of the device.
If none of these options help, I'd recommend contacting your sales manager or reseller to start an RMA process.
