I have just bought a new RUT955 and I am wondering how to insert my existing SIM card. The outline of the SIM card drawn on the surface of the PCB suggests that it should be oriented with the longer edge, with the non-square corner, closest to the user (in "landscape" rather than "portrait"), which suggests that the contacts would be facing upward.

You can see this outline, just about, in the picture in the Wiki here. However the same picture in the Wiki suggests that the SIM card should be inserted with the shorter edge closest to the user ("portrait") and with the non-square corner on the right.

Which is correct? (This ambiguity really shouldn't exist - it should be obvious how a SIM card is inserted, as it is with any other device.)

Thanks

Duh! Didn't think of that. I will obtain an adapter and try again.

Thank you for your help.

Hello,

In the picture you can see that the shorter edge (with the non-square corner) is closer to the panel and that the contacts are facing down.

Also be sure to insert the SIM card before you power on the router or reboot the router if you insert it while router is working.

Thank you for your response. The picture also shows a (differently oriented) outline of the SIM cards screen-printed on to the PCB, but you're saying that I should ignore that, and have the contacts facing down, with the non-square corner closest to the panel. Is that right? (Sorry if I am being obtuse, but want to be sure...)

Hello,

The outline on the PCB shows the same thing as here.

To sum up, you should slide the SIM card in with the cut corner oriented to YOUR (not the router's) right-hand side, with the contacts facing downwards.

I have inserted it as suggested in SIM1 and attached the power. In the Web UI status screen I see "SIM card slot in use: SIM 1", and an IMEI number, but it also says "data disconnected".

The SIM card state is reported as "not inserted". Operator state is "unregistered" and "connection type" is "3G (WCDMA)". The SIM is from EE and I have "everywhere" in the APN. This SIM card works fine in a different router.

Where have I gone wrong...?

Well if it shows that the SIM card is not inserted connection state: data disconnected is logical.

Are you sure that you inserted SIM card in SIM1 (contacts facing down to the PCB) slot and it was not configured in the mobile settings to use SIM2 as primary ?

Thank you, I agree that is logical, but if it believes that the SIM card is not inserted, why does it also show "SIM card slot in use: SIM 1"? The card is in SIM1. with contacts facing down, as per photo below. SIM1 is designated as primary.

Well now it is clear. You got a Micro SIM card inserted which is too small. You need to use a standard size SIM card.

You either need to put the SIM card back into it's original holder or to buy some kind of SIM card adapter (https://www.amazon.com/iSYFIX-Card-Adapter-Nano-Micro/dp/B00R25GJJW)
