Can anyone, looking at the events log I've attached shed any light on why there are random breaks in connection to the internet with this RUT240?  There's one today between 15.18 and 15.47hrs.

Hello,

Please attach a troubleshoot file to your question. Make sure the issue has occurred, then access router's WebUI, go to System -> Administration -> Troubleshoot section and download troubleshoot file from there. 

The file will provide more insight into the issue.
