i had a RUT240 to test, lovely unit. but the mobile data via the wifi was drastically getting slower with distance to the router. even 5 meters with line of sight reduced a 15/3Mbps mobile connection to 5/1Mbps. going through a ceiling dropped the connection to 2/0.3Mbps.

a regular consumer-grade all-in-one modem/wifi pocket router without external antennas did not show any degradation in the same scenario.

was that RUT240 just one faulty unit?

what mobile-data over wifi coverage is to be expected?

Hello,

Take note that here you are encountering two different variables: Mobile data connection speed and WiFi speed.

 - Regarding "Mobile data connection speed", RUT240 can achieve theoretical LTE speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Real life measurements exceeds 70+ Mbps. If you receive slower mobile data connection speeds, take note, that there are few aspects, which could result in poor mobile data connection speeds:

  • Mobile operator network load
  • Distance between router and base station
  • Environment noise (other devices, which are working at the same LTE frequency and are located nearby the router)

To increase your mobile data connections speeds, you can try to put router's LTE antenna as close to the window as possible, preferably in the direction to the operator base station.

 - Regarding "WiFi speed", the biggest performance loss comes from environment impact. For example:

  • Using 40 MHz Bandwidth, in remote location (with close to ideal circumstances, without any environment noise from other devices), RUT240 can achieve WiFi speeds greater than 70 Mbps at close range and around 30-40 Mbps at about 100m range.
  • However, in urban environment 20 MHz bandwidth (which is used by RUT240 by default) helps achieve faster speeds than 40 MHz due to less interference between different WiFi Access Points in the location. Depending on your situation, you should expect to achieve 20-35 Mbps speeds at about 10m range. Of course, if environment in your location is not "polluted" by other WiFi Access Points and if you do not have any dense physical obstructions between the router and your device, you should be able to reach 40-50 Mbps useful WiFi speeds (Which is close to theoretical maximum at 150 Mbps transfer speeds (this also includes all additional WiFi data, which is necessary, so that WiFi packets would reach their destination without errors), single antenna, 20 MHz bandwidth)

Easiest way to increase WiFi speeds is to simply download any "WiFi Analyzer" application on your smartphone or laptop, scan your WiFi environment and check which WiFi channels are mostly used in that particular location. Knowing this information, you can change router's WiFi channel to the one, which is least used. Of course, if situation in your location is very bad (e.g. there are multiple Access Points, all working on 2.4 GHz), you could try to use different router: Either router with multiple cable WiFi antennas, or router, which would be working on newer 5 GHz WiFi frequency. From Teltonika's portfolio that would be RUT950 (2.4 GHz 2x2 MIMO WiFi) or RUTX11 (2.4 + 5 GHz WiFi) devices.
