I am trying to setup a shared drive using an SSD connected to the usb port of a RUT955. USB tools installed, latest firmware installed, RUT9XX_R_00_06_06.   It can see the drive connected. If I create a user/password and a shared directory, I cannot access it.

If I enable guest access, I can see it, but obviously not write to it.  (\\Router_Share\test)

Disable guest, no go.

If I look at \\Router_Share, (no directory extension) I can now see the directory itself, but again cannot access.

have added extra username/password s, still nogo.

Hello.

I checked it on the latest firmware and it works.

At the beginning, try to allow access to all guests without creating users and try to go into your directory.
To do this, in the Shared Directories table, enable Allow guests.
If you got access to the directory, try to add the user. Be careful with username and password.

Regards.
