RUT240 Mobile data disconnects every 2 minutes

I have a RUT240 which had been reasonably stable for over two of years but is now disconnecting and reconnecting mobile data almost exactly every two minutes. The regularity of the disconnect/connect events lead me to believe that it's not a signal problem. 

Steps I've tried:

  • Had a replacement SIM supplied by my ISP (Three in the UK).
  • Tested the SIM in an old phone and didn't notice any disconnections (though I didn't have any decent logs to view so I was just judging on streaming / downloading sessions).
  • Tried enabling and disabling the auto-reboot options.
  • Updated the firmware (currently RUT2XX_R_00.01.12).
  • Reset the RUT240 to factory settings.

Hi,

I couldn't find anything strange in your system log. But here are suggestions that may help you:

  • Update your RUT240 to the latest firmware version (1.13).
  • Do you have any other RUT240 that you could test your SIM on? This way we could easily identify that the device has lived long enough and needs to be sent to RMA.
  • Check if antennas are screwed in tightly and do not get loose easily.
  • Is the pattern exactly 2 minutes? If yes, it must be a software problem, make sure you have everything set by defaults and no more services enabled.

Thanks for your suggestions. 

  • I will update to 1.13.
  • Unfortunately I don't have any other RUT240.
  • The (external) antennas are screwed in tight.
  • Yes, the pattern seems to be almost exactly two minutes - see the recent connect/disconnect entries in the next comment (I hit the max character limit when I tried to include them here): the disconnect events generally occur on the 34th second of every other minute. I agree that software seems like the most likely culprit. I reverted to factory settings but after doing that I could still see the (disabled) ping reboot that I'd set up previously so I'm assuming that the factory reset doesn't wipe all user settings. I wonder if there's a more thorough method to clear settings?

Try doing firstboot in CLI and rebooting, it should initiate full wipe.

Also, try updating to 1.13 before that.

I'm beginning to think that this RUT240 might be a bit unwell. 

I've tried upgrading the firmware several times ("From file" because the internet connection is too unreliable to perform an "Update from server") but it never succeeds. Once it got as far as verifying the .bin file and gave me the final choice to upgrade or abort, but after a bit of waiting the router became unresponsive then reappeared with the old FW version.

I tried the CLI "firstboot" option but nothing happened - I was expecting to see a message like "This will erase all settings and remove any installed packages. Are you sure? [N/y]".

This page suggests that the CLI "firstboot" performs the same actions as the hardware pin reset and the WebUI "Restore default settings" so maybe there's not much to be gained from investigating the CLI failure. https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/RUT240_Device_Recovery_Options

I'll keep trying but if there's anything else you can add I'd be very grateful.

Finally! The latest FW upgrade worked and I'd unticked "Keep all settings" so perhaps this time whatever the "bad" configuration was, it was properly reset ,or perhaps the 01.12 FW was at fault. The evidence is this exceptional uptime - 9 minutes 24 seconds! I haven't seen such numbers for a long time!
