The RUT240 (and probably other Teltonika devices as well, using the same software) seems to have serious startup reliability issues, especially when used with the Netgear WN1000RP wifi extender, possibly any other routers as well. I move both devices frequently between two locations. The issues are:

a) Frequently when plugging the RUT240 into the wall, the WLAN will not show up at all (the lights are showing mobile connection), irrespective of whether the wifi extender is plugged in. A few plugging in attempts may be needed.

b) When the wifi extender is connected to the wall before or shortly after the RUT240, the internet won't work. There is mobile connection according to the lights on the RUT240, but on devices connected to it, there is no internet. Often the WLAN also drops out. Sometimes a blank “hotspot” login page is displayed when connecting, which is seemingly trying to reload itself all the time. I think this is the admin page of the extender loading itself in a loop—but why would that show up from the RUT240 network at all? DNS requests with the command line `host` program give local 192.168.1.x addresses for remote hosts! My guess is that the RUT240 has started to use and forward dummy DHCP/DNS servers on the extender (not connected to internet as the RUT240 was not ready), but why would it do that, and is there any way to disable such behaviour?

PS. I have failover disabled.

I even added a firewall rule blocking port 68 from the extender but no help. Nothing works with the logs saying: Found already running DHCP-server with 192.168.1.250 gateway

Hello,

Thank you for contacting.

May i know what is the firmware on the device?

The WAN source is Mobile only . Right?

What is the signal strength on the mobile ?

https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/Mobile_Signal_Strength_Recommendations

How is extender and Rut240 connected ? What are the IP addresses , extender is having internet from Rut240 . Right?

Are you using both the mobile antennas and a wifi antenna provided in the box?

Is it possible to draw a topology of the network for my better understanding ? How everything is connected and what are the IP addresses.

Also you can manually assign DNS in the device configurations:

https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/RUT240_LAN#Advanced_Settings_2

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-2000-server/cc958941(v=technet.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

Thanks.

It seems that the extender boots up its dummy DHCP server if it cannot connect to the RUT240 when powered up. The RUT240 in turn by default disables its own DHCP server when it detects the extender's DHCP server soon after powering up. The extender's DHCP server then configures on clients a dummy DNS server on the extender itself, which gives the extender as the destination for every query. So nothing works. To do the following on the RUT240 seems to be a workaround to the issue:

1. Add firewall rule for DHCP send (port 68).
2. Force the RUT240 DHCP server (Network -> LAN -> Advanced Setting -> Force DHCP Server

The question is, why is at least forcing the DHCP server not the default? Why don't the default settings control rogue devices on the network?

Hello,

What is the extender you are using ?

Does it has WAN port?

Does this extender has dhcp ? have you tried to keep it off?

Force DHCP have multiple options like DNS server etc

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-2000-server/cc958941(v=technet.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

So, depending on the needs if you want to force DNS server or other parameters its for that.

Its not only DHCP server for IP addresses , you can also configure multiple DNS servers

Thanks.
