a wired connection works but not wifi, i have set up wpa2 with a password, however when you do this and connect form a phone, it takes you to a page to log in top the router which times out, any ideas what we have done wrong

Try to disable the portal (landing page) mode. Most use this option for a hotell wifi.
If you really want that landing page , try to disable the WPA2.
