Hi there.

Version: RUTX_R_00.07.03.1

SMS utils for SIM 1 / EE is working perfectly. I am sending 'Switch' (no authorisation, from specific group/number) to SIM1 phone number and it switches SIM immediately.

However, for SIM 2 with Vodafone UK, SMS Utils is very confused

No matter what command is sent, it returns the very first command initially received - in my case text status for 'monitoring_status' is returned, and no action is taken. If email forward is enabled (specifically excluding forwarding SMS Utils), it proceeds to send an email with a previous command, when it shouldn't be sending anything.

I've looked through the System Log, but the SMS Utils is a black box. It shows sending the SMS to SMS Utils and then deleting the SMS (see log excerpt).

For some reason, it keeps regurgitating the initial command, even after sending 20 commands afterwards, and sends erroneous email forwards. This is ONLY on my Vodafone SIM.

I've taken the SIM out and placed it in a mobile. IMPORTANT - once I send a test SMS to said Vodafone SIM inserted in iPhone, it receives a flood of my prior text 'commands', followed by receiving my test message. This makes no sense, as RUTX11 is set to Store SMS on Modem AND it says the SMS message/commands is deleted in the System Log. Somehow the RUTX11 is getting notified of a received SMS message, processing it incorrectly through SMS Utils, and then suggesting an SMS delete, even though Vodafone UK seems to be queueing the SMS (i.e. not getting successful receive confirmation from device), awaiting the SIM to be inserted into a Phone (iPhone XS Max) before dispatching the queue of SMS'. To confirm - the messages are SMS', and not iMessages.

P.S. there are also issues with receiving Vodafone UK SMS' generally into inbox. They duplicate MANY times, and reappear several times after being deleted. There must be some handshake issue of sorts between RUTX11 and Vodafone UK.

LOG EXCERPT:

Sun Jan  8 15:15:52 2023 kern.notice kernel: SMS received from: +xxxxxxxxxx (internal modem)

Sun Jan  8 15:15:53 2023 daemon.info /usr/sbin/sms_utils: [3-1] Messages sent to +xxxxxxxxxxx

Sun Jan  8 15:15:53 2023 daemon.info /usr/sbin/sms_utils: Removing SMS '0' from memory

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out!

Has this issue only started happening after updating to RUTX_R_00.07.03.1?

Was a factory reset tried?

I'd like you to replicate the issue, then navigate to System → Administration → Troubleshoot and generate a troubleshoot file.

It can be attached to the original post and will only be visible to Teltonika moderators.

Hi DaumantasG,

I've only started using SMS Utilities since a factory reset and upgrade to 07.03.1 a few days ago. However, odd SMS behaviour with my Vodafone SIM has been persistent since purchase a couple of months ago. I keep getting the same SMS' Messages come through from my Vodafone UK SIM2 - sometimes 10-20 times over several days. Deleting them, and they randomly reappear.

Today, I had several Forced SIM Switches that got initiated at random. In looking at the logs, SMS Utils had identified a text message and took action. I've sent NO SMS commands from Vodafone today. Once I realised what the cause was, I had to turn off that SMS Command to prevent it from being randomly triggered. Additionally, I must have deleted that message 10 or so times in SMS Read Messages.

This does NOT happen with EE. Only with Vodafone UK. I have to assume that the receipt handshake between the RUTX device and Operator is somehow confused when applied to Vodafone UK SIM's. It is this persistent re-sending and/or queueing that is causing the above problems.

I am anxious to send further Vodafone SMS Utilities Commands, as I cannot afford this behaviour during the work week. Is there anything else I can do to help you investigate? Are you guys able to experiment using a Vodafone SIM?

Thanks.

Hello,

none of our clients have experienced this behavior with Vodafone as far as I could find.

I'd recommend performing a factory reset, and if that does not help contact Vodafone, as it seems like it could be a carrier issue.

Also, does this issue occur when sending the SMS from a different phone?

If these steps do not help, please contact me via private messages.

Morning DaumantasG,

I've been plagued by this recurrent issue this morning. Please see Troubleshoot File and my own Log Analysis and Notation (XLS, 10th Jan tab).

The fundamental issue here is that the Device KEEPS receiving old SMS', and if those SMS are SMS Utils commands that are active, it triggers action. In my case recurrent Forced SIM Switches and Status Updates. This relates to this ticket and this ticket I have raised.

Take a look at my Log XLS attached for 10th Jan. You can see a bunch of SMS Received notifications followed by actions being taken. Those message are at least 48h old, have have been received at 10-20 times and counting. Moreover, it says these messages are removed, although some of them end up being stored - see below. Note the received date, whilst todays date is10th Jan:

Hopefully my analysis and the troubleshoot file will help you understand what is happening. Please let me know how I can assist in getting to the bottom of this. The SMS' are being sent from a iPhone 13 Pro Max, with iMessages turned off.

Thank you for the information.

Could you try setting the SMS storage as "SIM Card" and see if that helps?

I'll report this issue to our RnD team and see if they can give any insight into this issue.

Hi -

I will set both SIM's to SIM Card Memory and re-activate the SMS Utils to see if any are triggered. I will report back.

Meanwhile, thank you for having RnD look into this odd behaviour.

Let's wait to see if this behavior reappears before making a report so that I can describe if this helped.

I have updated the Troubleshoot file

Please see time stamps:

  • 8:36:18
  • 8:37:11
  • 8:51:51
  • 8:52:14
  • 8:53:08
  • 8:58:57
During this period I had initiated a few forced SIM changes in CLI (troubleshooting on other tickets), but not this many. Are you able to tell which are CLI initiated and which are through some other mechanism.
During this period (towards backend) I made the SIM Card memory changes you requested, in addition to re-enabling the SMS Utilities commands. Whilst I have not yet seen another Vodafone SIM Utils message come through, I am not sure what has forced some of these most recent Switches. Any colour you can offer would be great (acknowledging some of them were me through CLI).
Thanks.

In the logs, I can see, that some SMS messages were sent, however, none were received, and none of the changes were done by an SMS message.

Let's wait until tomorrow and see how it goes.

DaumantasG -

It happened again, right in a middle of a client call. :(

Triggered by yet another random old SMS being picked up by SMS Utils. Troubleshoot file updated. Happened at 11:45:00. As mentioned, the device keeps receiving the same message(s) from ~2 days ago - I can't seem to stop this incessant flow on duplicated messages come through from the Vodafone SIM. Additionally, I see this message keep coming through to Read Messages, when SMS Utils should be deleting them on receipt.

For now, I will need to turn off the SMS Utils commands, as this is getting silly now.

What could be going on here, that forces Vodafone to keep sending to the device? It's like Vodafone is not getting the confirmation that the messages have been successfully received to the/a device. I suspect if I put the SIM into a spare phone, I will get this and other messages through, and Vodafone will finally stop this re-attempt. If I do this, are there things you'd like me to test?

Would you be able to share any advice on solving this issue

With Teltonika to more deeply investigate and schedule into the backlog I believe. I’ve provided a bunch of diagnostic info. Hopefully something that can get get solved in the near term.
